Concepts Flashcards
Affordance
Is a feature that enables a platform to be used a certain way, meaning that they shape and structure social participations, limiting and prioritizing some types of interactions over others.
Algorithms
Encoded procedures for transforming input data into desired output, based on specific calculations.
Algorithms (public relevancy of)
Algorithms determine what to know and how to know it, because results are based on our profile; governing flow of information.
Algorithmic folk theories
Assumptions of how an algorithm works
Algorithmic visibility
The practice in which creators need to gain notice of the platforms algorithm to be visible to an audience.
Archival cultures
Everything gets archived. Even deleted content could still be archived, copied, reposted or screenshotted.
Attention Economy
Attention is now a form of wealth due to the increasing amount of information available that makes concentration harder.
Authenticity
Being true to the self, constructed in dialog with others.
Cyberlibertarianism
Mixture of libertarianism (individual freedom over collective duties, opposed to centralized state power) and “technological Utopianism and counter cultural values”
Collaborative Filtering
Recommendation system used to recommend based on the behaviour of others with similar preferences.
Data Extractivism

Memex
A vision of a small storage device that will help organize and access information.
Instagrammatics

Lean platforms
Focus only on the essential parts of the business. (Not many employees)
Market
A space where consumers and sellers meet to facilitate the exchange or transaction of goods and services.
Megamachines
Technological approaches that depend on industrial infrastructures, supply chains, and human labor that stretch around the globe but are kept opaque
