Concepts Flashcards
Osmosis
A passage of solvent through membrane which separates a dilute (pure solution) from a more concentrated solution.
Semipermeable Membrane
Membrane that allows certain types of molecules to pass through (depends on size of molecules)
Osmotic Pressure
Pressure that must be applied to a solution to halt net flow of solvent molecules through the semipermeable membrane.
Hypotonic Solution
A solution with higher concentrations of solute within the cell. (Lower concentrations of solute outside of the cell) [Net In flow]
Hypertonic Solution
A solution with lower concentrations of solute within the cell. (Higher concentrations of solute outside the cell) [Net Out Flow]
Isotonic Solution
A solution with the same amount of concentration of solute inside the cell and outside the cell. [No Net Flow]
Diffusion
Net movement of particles from one area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Accuracy
How close the measurement is to the actual value.
Precision
How close measurements are to each other. (“Reproducibility)
Atomic Number
of Protons + #of Electrons
Mass Number
of Protons + # of Neutrons
Physical Properties
Characteristics observed without changing the identity of substance.
Chemical Properties
Characteristics that describe how a substance undergoes or resists chemical change.
Physical Changes
Changes appearance without changing identity of substance.
Chemical Changes
Undergoes change in composition. (Reaction)
