Concept three Flashcards
What type of compound is made up of a metal+ a non-metal?
an ionic compound
What type of compound is made up of two non-metals?
a molecular compound
What is an aqueous solution?
when an ionic compound is dissolved in water
What is an ion?
an ion is an atom or a group of atoms which have an electrical charge
When an element loses electrons, what charge is it?
positive charge
When an element gains electrons, what charge is it?
negetive charge
What are polatomic ions?
groups of atoms acting as one
If a chemical has more than one ion charge, what is added to the name?
a roman numeral
Ionic compound properties (6)
high melting and boiling point, good conductors, distinct shape, solids at room temp, can dissolve in water and uses valence charge
Molecular compound properties (4)
low melting and boiling point, poor conductors, can be liquids or gases, doesn’t use valence charge
Which compound only uses -ide suffixes?
ionic compound
Which compound uses both prefixes (depending on how many atoms are in the element) on both first and second non-metals and -ide suffixes?
molecular compound
