(maladaptive) responses through unrealistic perception of self
- The nurse identifies and helps the individual get thought negative thoughts
Self concept / perception
how a person identifies themselves, it is conscious and unconscious - Includes thoughts and attitude
Self Esteem
How a person feels about themselves
- Thoughts come first, people react on feelings, always and underlying thought
Self identity
recognizing self-quality and self-potential, who you really are always all the time
Self awareness
individual patters of values, behaviors, needs, beliefs,
- FIRST thing you need to give effective good patient care
- Ongoing throughout lifetime

What are some factors that influence development of self concept?

What are some self concept stressors?
o Altered identity loss of identity, loss of self from divorce, growing up,
o Altered body image
o Altered role performance changes thoughout life, some are expected some are not
o Altered self-esteem
What are some indivudual risk factors related to alterd self esteem?
Cognitive, physical, or emotional deficits.
Age:
Sociocultural impact that is also altered- more than one problem illness w/ financial problems…
Coping mechanisms in place
what are some physiologic and psychological consequences of altered self esteem?
o Anxiety, personality, and mood disorders (depression, mania)
o Ineffective intra and inter personal communication
o Lowered stress threshold and ineffective coping
What are some things a nurse should be aware of regarding there assessment of themselves?
- Public image: drugs, alc, abusive in public, will not be trusted in a work environment
Work environment: – will you be a constructiveness or deconstructivism
Education: will you embrace life long learning… always growing
Professional, social, cultural values - Determine impact of family, education, abilities, society, culture on yourself

When assessing a patient what are some things you should look for?
Nurse’s effect on a patient’s self-concept
Determine impact of family, education, abilities, society, culture on their self always be aware what you could be doing to the patient’s self-concept
Trust: develops first, but trust is intrinsic,
Caring: focus is on patient
Active listening:
Empathy: knowing and understanding how someone else feels
Presence: be there physically and sycologically
Building rapport: help and listen develop trust, concentrate
Accepting, positive approach: watch reaction
Boundaries:
Transference – projects thoughts and feelings from the past to the present
Countertrasference – the nurse does this
o Boundaries – nurses who focus time on one patient, visit patient on off hours, do things for patient that they can do themselves, discount other actions of care to certain patients, resent other care of nurses to other patients, consistently think about patient when off duty
