Concept 3: Weather Flashcards
Explain why the Earth has wind
The area of the earth near the equator gets the most solar radiation. Its unequally heated so it causes winds all around earth.
explain why the earth has seasons
When the hemisphere is tilted
Towards the sun = Summer
Away from the sun= Winter
Neither towards or away from the sun = spring or autumn
Identify the three main wind circulation patterns
Hadley cells
Ferrel cells
Polar cells
Describe how the movement of air impacts rainfall
the air rises it makes low pressure that = makes rain.
Explain why air masses round the Earth move at different speeds (towards/away)
Air masses that move towards the equator = fall behind
Air masses that move away from the equator = push ahead
Compare how air circulates in each hemisphere (northern and southern)
Air deflects toward the right in the Northern Hemisphere and toward the left in the Southern Hemisphere
Coriolis effect
Not every point at earth’s surface is traveling at the same speed. Something traveling a farther distance at the same in a short amount of time must be going faster(equator). Points near the poles of the earth are spinning slower than the regions near the equator.
