concept 2 vocabulary Flashcards
atom
the smallest unit of a chemical element . An atom consists of a dense central nucleus composed of composed of protons and neutrons , surrounded by a cloud pf rapidly orbiting electrons .
Electron
A stable subatomic particle with a negative electric charge that is opposite to that of a proton but is equal in magnitude . ( this is what gets transferred in electricity , and static electricity.
Neutrons
An electrically neutral or no charge subatomic particle that has a mass slightly greater than that of a of a proton and is part of every atomic nucleus.
protons
A stable subatomic particle that is part of the nucleus of an atom and has a positive electric charge . Its charge is opposite to that of an electron but is equal in magnitude . The amount of protons depends on the individual element .
static electricity
Electric charge that accumulates on an object rather flowing through it as a current .
concept 3 vocab,
magnetic Domain
A region composed of a group of atoms whose magnetic fields are aligned in the same direction.
permanent magnet
A magnet that retains its magnetism after removal of the magnetizing force .
pole
Either of the two areas of a magnet where the magnetic field is the strongest . the north and south poles are the strongest.
concept 4 vocab:
insulator
A material of such low conductivity that flow of current through its is negligible ( usually rubber)
conductor
A substance , body ,or device that readily conducts heat , electricity , sound ,etc. (copper)
electric motor
A electric motor is a device for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy in the form of rotation.
electromagnet
A device of a coil of insulated wire wrapped around an iron core that becomes magnetized when an electric electric current flows through the wires .
generator
A device that converts motion (kinetic energy) into electrical energy . A generator contains a coil of coil of wire that rotates within a magnetic a field , producing an electrical current in the wire
solenoid
A coil of wire that acts as a magnet when an electric current in the wire
transformer
A device used to change the voltage of an alternating current in one circuit (the primary circuit ) to a different voltage in a second circuit ( the secondary ). A transformer consists of frame of easily magnetised material with two coils of wire wound around it . Each coil is connected to one of the two circuits .
