concept 1- Demographics Flashcards
what is demography the study of?
- population
- population density
- Historical trends in population growth
explain what population and population density are?
Population- total number of people
population density-total number of people for a particular amount of land (ie: per km^2)
what are the 3 kinds of population distribution and describe them??
- concentrated-> near resources (mines, forests, raw materials) appears as bunches of population
- linear-> along water or transportation routes (appears as a line)
- Dispersed-> farming (appears equally dispersed)
where do most Canadian’s live (region wise)
50% of Canadians live in the great lakes and st. Lawrence lowlands. canada would be considered linear (near the us border) and because upper canada is to cold to live in.
how do you calculate birth rate, dealth rate, and natural increase rate?
birth rate= # of births per year divided by population multiplied by 1000
dealth rate= # of dealths per year divided by population multiplied by 1000
natural increase= birth rate subtract dealth rate= natural increase
canadas birth rate is 10/1000, Canadas dealth rate is 7/1000, that means canadas natural increase is 3 per every 1000.
how do you calculate immigration, emigration and net migration rate?
Immigration- immigrants divided by total population multiplied by 1000
Emigration- emigrants divided by total population multiplied by 1000
net migration- immigrant rate subtract emigration rate
what is and how do you calculate population growth rate?
Population growth rate is the measurement that combines both natural increase and net migration to calculate the overall growth of a country’s population.
how to calculate- natural increase rate plus the net migration rate
what are causes for higher birth rates in the 18-1900’s?
people use to have more kids for many reasons, one being they needed more kids to work the land and second being that many of their kids would die early from things like diseases. they also had more kids because of religious beliefs and lack of knowledge.
why have dealth rates changed drastically?
people are having less kids because they’re all living longer, and because of new medication less people are dying.
what is the baby boom?
a baby boom is a period of time where the birth rates are high, for example after world war 2 there was a huge baby boom, those babies are now seniors.
what questions does demography help answer?
- why are more schools closing then opening? (aging and moving factors)
- why will you likley work more years then your. parents before retirement (baby boom)
- why are old rock groups like the rolling stones still popular?
how do demographers identity 3 important stages of life?
- children (0-15) also called dependants
- working adults (16-64)
- seniors (65 and older) also could be dependants
what age population is increasing ?
the seniors
what are characteristics of a population pyramid ?
- paired horizontal bar graph
- females on the right, males on the left
- both sides show percentages of people in each age group
- allows you to easily compare countrys population
what is the dependency load?
part of the population that needs to be supported, made up of the children and senior age groups
