Q

What are the differences between DSM IV & DSM V as it relates to the diagnosis of disorders related to addiction?

A

DSM IV

  • Added differentiated diagnoses between dependence and abuse.
  • This created “diagnostic orphans” who didn’t meet diagnostic criteria yet still had significant problems related to substance use.
    • Partial and full remission criteria were added based on 6 or more months of abstinence or reduced use without symptoms

DSM V

Diagnoses a single category of substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum form mild to severe.

  • Removed terminology that might have been interpreted as stigmatizing (abuse, abuser).
  • Eliminated the problem of “diagnostic orphans”.
  • Remission criteria – in sustained remission if they have met no diagnostic criteria (other than craving) for 12 months or longer. Early remission is defined as not meeting diagnostic criteria between 3 and 12 months,
