CON 714 Quiz 2 Flashcards
What new process addiction was added to the DSM V?
Gambling
Procedure that detects the possible presence of a problem and the need for further evaluation.
Screen
What are things that you can genuinely affirm, that you respect and appreciate? Point out their strengths.
- “Glad you made it here today.”
- “From the way you describe your experience with traffic court, it seems you’re dedicated to the process and willing to adhere to the rules of the program. Those are characteristics you can carry into your recovery.”
What are the differences between DSM IV & DSM V as it relates to the diagnosis of disorders related to addiction?
DSM IV
- Added differentiated diagnoses between dependence and abuse.
- This created “diagnostic orphans” who didn’t meet diagnostic criteria yet still had significant problems related to substance use.
- Partial and full remission criteria were added based on 6 or more months of abstinence or reduced use without symptoms
DSM V
Diagnoses a single category of substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum form mild to severe.
- Removed terminology that might have been interpreted as stigmatizing (abuse, abuser).
- Eliminated the problem of “diagnostic orphans”.
- Remission criteria – in sustained remission if they have met no diagnostic criteria (other than craving) for 12 months or longer. Early remission is defined as not meeting diagnostic criteria between 3 and 12 months,
What does OARS stand for?
Open Questions
Affirmation
Reflective Listening
Summarizing
24-item yes/no questionnaire (self-report) concerning lifetime alcohol-related behavior (doesn’t cover current use). Developed in 1971 to screen for alcohol problems in the general population.
MAST
(Michigan Alcohol Screening Test)
Greater amounts of the drug are needed to get the same effect.
Tolerance
Ongoing process used to understand the nature and causes of the problem and consider routes to change. Includes gaining understanding of the context of the issue, why challenges are emerging, and what treatment would be most appropriate.
Evaluation
How do you asses tolerance with a client ?
- How often have you been using?
- Do you need to use more to experience the same effect?
- Do you have symptoms of withdrawal?
The body adapts to the drug over time and adjusts normal functioning. When the drug is removed, a physical “rebound” occurs (withdrawal).
Physiological Dependence
4-question screening tool. Highly effective in detecting alcohol dependence in the past year across gender and ethnic groups - white, black and Hispanic. Research has also shown that the RAPS4 is more effective than the CAGE test, which has traditionally been the most widely used test in clinical settings.
RAPS4
(Rapid Alcohol Problems Screen, 4 question)
What are some reflective statments (not questions) that you could reflectively share with the client? (Remember to start the statment with “you”)
- “You’re feeling guilt because your mom confronted you about the kids.”
- “You need to travel for the meeting but you have reservations about whether you can stay about from the mini-bar.”
How do you asses psychological dependence with a client?
- Do you drink in order to go out or go to work?
- Do you drink to feel less anxious/have more energy or to numb feelings?
10-item screening tool (self-report) developed by the World Health Organization to assess alcohol consumption, drinking behaviors, and alcohol-related problems. Specifically assesses frequency of use, dependency, and personal/social problems.
AUDIT
(Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test)
What are several examples of asking open questions?
- “What brings you here today?”
- “How does alcohol affect you?
- “What are you thinking about your drinking at this point?”
