Q

silicon chips: integrated circuits, microprocessors (CPUs)

A

As a whole, a CPU works by processing instructions supplied by the PC. The CPU gets the instructions from memory and processes them in sequence by first fetching the instruction, then decoding them, and finally executing them. That is the very short answer to the question of how a CPU works but it is basically exactly that.
