Q

What are the 2 network types?

A
Peer to peer (all computers are connected to a hub)
Client server (one computer is a server which connects to a hub, the hub connects to the other computers)

One common linking cable
Nodes connected off the cable
Inexpensive

16
Q

What are the disadvantages of bus topology?

A

Slows down when there is heavy traffic
Frequent data collisions
Breakage of cable affects the whole network

17
Q

What is a WAN?

A

A wide area network is a network that covers a large geographical area and is usually provided by telecoms companies

18
Q

What is VPN?

A

A network that uses the internet as an infrastructure and needs enhanced security

19
Q

What are protocols?

A

The rules for the connection between devices on a network or from that network to another

20
Q

What is TCP/IP?

A

The most commonly used set of protocols

21
Q

What are DNS servers?

A

Servers that convert domain names (www.google.co.uk etc.) to IP addresses

22
Q

What is MAC addressing?

A

A media access control address is one that relates to the hardware of one computer (like a physical IP address)

23
Q

What is a packets?

A

Chunks of data that travel around a network until they reach their destination where they open up

24
Q

Give the 3 security methods on a network

A

Access levels (certain users have more permissions than others)
Passwords
Encryption (WEP, WPA etc.)

25
Why do we have network policies?
Policies ensure users understand what is expected of them concering their network
26
What is a modem?
A device that converts the analogue signal of Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) to a digital signals
27
What is the difference between bandwidth and broadband?
Bandwidth is range of frequencies that can be used for transmitting a signal (rate of data transmission in a network) Broadband is when the range of frequencies allows the internet speed to be higher than 4Mbps
28
What is ADSL?
Asymmetric digital subscriber line which uses spare capacity on POTS to deliver a higher download speed (upload speed stays the same)
29
What is the difference between lossy and lossless compression?
Lossy compression reduces file size by removing data | Lossless compression keeps all data and allows reconstruction of the original file
