Computing Flashcards
What is an algorithm?
An algorithm is a set of commands (instructions).
What is debugging?
bugs in algorithms
Debugging is when you find and fix bugs (errors or problems) with your algorithm.
What is iteration?
used in algorithms
Iteration is similar to the word ‘repeat’. It means part or all of your algorithm is repeated. This can be an amount of times or forever.
screen, printer, speaker
What is an output?
An output is something the computer does because of its algorithm. It can be on screen or outside of the computer like a printer or speaker.
Bluebot buttons, a remote control, a keyboard, a mouse, voice activation
What is an input?
An input is something a computer is given to make it do something.
What do computers store or save things onto?
A computer can save onto its internal storage. This is either a hard disk or a solid state disk. Some computers don’t have internal storage. They save into ‘the cloud’ which is a connected computer on the Internet.
What is the difference between software and hardware?
Software is a set of instructions that tell the computer what to do. All computer games and apps are software.
Hardware is the physical parts of a computer like the screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers, storage drive.
We save things we want to keep as files. How and why do we keep our files organised?
saved game positions, documents, photos, videos
We give them sensible names that tells us what is in the files. If we do not give them sensible names, we won’t know which file to retrieve (open) when we need it.
What do Word Processors do?
Let us create written documents. In documents you can add photos or other images.
How can we
Give examples of how computers are used at work.

Give examples of how computers are used at home.
What is data
Data is information when it has been organised.
Supermarkets, barcodes, stock levels, online shops, database records
What do you know about databases?
A database is a collection of data that a computer will use. It is organised information
Supermarkets, libraries, online shops and local shops all use databases.
Supermarkets hold data on customers likes and dislikes when they use a store card like a Nectar card or a Tesco Clubcard. All the shops items for sale and their details (such as price and barcode) are stored in the database. When someone scans the barcode and pays for their items, the stock level and reordering can be carried out automatically.
Similar things happen in online stores and libraries when you borrow books.
You can use the internet on laptops, tablets, phones, watches etc
What is the internet and what is it used for?
The internet is a network of lots and lots of computers that are connected to each other.
Some computers are connected with wires. Some computers are conected wirelessly (without wires).
The internet is used by people to communicate.
