Computer Systems Flashcards
Describe high latency
The large delay in time it takes for signals to arrive at their destination
Which type of computer doesn’t use standard binary system?
A. Hybrid
B. Mainframe
C. Quantum
D. Smartphone
Quantum
Purpose of a Quantum computer system
. To solve complex problems beyond the capacity of a standard computer by utilising the principles of quantum physics
OR
. To process data and perform calculations million times faster than currently available computers
Features of a Quantum computer system?
. They work with quantum bits (qubits)
. {They rely on binary but don’t use the standardised binary system}
. Unlike binary, they aren’t limited to two states (0 or 1) like mainframe. Qubits represent atomic particles, which can be in several different states at the same time
Advantages of Quantum computer system
+ Offers advanced analytical speeds, enabling organisations to perform computations at unparalleled rates. This leads to faster decision-making, reduced time-to-market for products and services, and increased productivity across various industries.
+ Can represent a combination of the states (0 or 1) simultaneously, which makes quantum computers so fast.
Disadvantages of Quantum computer system
- Difficult to configure/regulate, quantum errors are more difficult to correct because qubits can take an infinite number of states.
Features of a Quantum computer system
. A high-performance computer used for large-scale computer purposes.
. Uses traditional bit technology - 0s and 1s
Purpose of a Mainframe computer system
Use to :-
. process large amounts of data
. solve scientific and engineering problems that require complex calculations with large datasets (weather forecasting etc.)
Advantages of a Quantum computer system
. reliable and secure because they have large backup procedures/capabilities
. components are replaced automatically without downtime
Disadvantages of Quantum computer system
. very expensive and require teams of experts to oversee them, so are used by organisations that need to process very large amounts of data quickly, such as bank, credit card companies and airlines
Purpose of a Server
. designed to process requests and deliver data to other (client) computers over a local network / the internet.
Features of a Server
. High specification
. requires a server OS
Advantages of a Server
. Allows clients to be a lesser specification as many of the processes can be carried out centrally
Disadvantages of a Server
. Difficult to set-up and maintain because it requires specialist knowledge
Purpose of a Desktop
. used for creating documents, gaming, browsing etc.
