Collection if parts that work together for a defined purpose
What is a computer
An electronic programmable data processing machine

What is a general purpose system?
Personal computers, smartphones etc which are designed to perform multiple tasks
What is a dedicated system
Systems which are specially produced to perform a single function
What is a control system?
Systems which control machinery
What is an embedded system
Systems which are part of a larger system (usually control systems)
What are expert systems
Systems designed to behave like human expert. Made up of a knowledge base, an inference engine and an interface
What are management information systems
They bring together information from all parts of an organisation and cover data, technology and people
What is meant by data integrity?
Data being accurate and consistent throughout its life, and that the data reflects real-world reality
What are de facto standards?
Standards which develop over time due to common usage eg. Qwerty keyboard and Microsoft word
What are de Jure standards
De facto standards which have become so universally accepted that they have to be adhered to. Eg. Tcp/ip , ASCII, PDF AND Unicode
What are proprietary standards
Standards owned by an organisation which ensure compatability between the companies products
Industry standards?
Standards set but non-commercial organisations
Open standards are…
Publicly available, produced collaboratively, not for profit and free of charge. Eg. HTTP, HTML, TCP/IP
