Computer Networks Flashcards
Learn different types of networks
What is a Network?
A connection of multiple computers that can perform autonomous processing.
What are the different kinds of Networks?
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Local Area Network (LAN)
What is WAN?
Wide Area Network
Where several computers that are distances from each other are connected. It is also known as Nationwide or International network.
What is LAN?
Local Area Network
Where computers are all connected within small areas such as IT rooms, hospitals, libraries, universities etc.
What is MAN?
Metropolitan Area Network
Where a number of LANs connect to each other.
What are the two types of Communication channels?
Point to Point
Broadcast
What is Point To Point channel?
Qhwre computers can be directly linked with each other to transmit data or directly linked by other computers to transmit data if some computers don’t share a link.
What is Broadcast channel?
Where all computers are connected to a single communication channel and all the data are transferred to that channel.
When a message is being sent from a computer, it must include the address of the particular recipient so other computers will ignore it.
What is Error Detection?
Where bit patterns can get corrupted during transmission
What is Parity Checking?
Where a bit is added to a character before transmission of data.
