Computer Networks Flashcards
memorize
What is data communication
Data communication is the transfer of data and information between 2 or more computers
How can data be transmitted between computers
1) upload-send data
2) download-receive data
3)point-to-point-direct link between 2 computers
4) broadcast-use one computer to transmit data and information
What is LAN
Local Area Network
A LAN is a network that connects devices in a limited area, such as a home, school, or office
What is WAN
Wide Area Network
It’s a large computer network that connects groups of computers over large distances.
What is MAN
Metropolitan Area Network
a computer network that connects computers in a metropolitan area. A metropolitan area can be a single city, multiple cities and towns, or any large area with multiple buildings
What is WLAN
wireless local area network. It’s a network that connects devices using radio waves instead of wired connections.
Disadvantages: security, limited range
Advantages: Cost savings, Flexibilty
WLAN use high frequency radio signal to communicate or lasers to comunicate between work stations
what is Hub
A hub is a device that connects multiple computers and devices together.
What is a Star Network
A star network is a type of local area network (LAN) topology where all nodes are connected to a central hub
What is a Ring Network
A ring network is a network topology where each device is connected to two other devices in a circular manner. Data travels from node to node, with each node handling each packet
What is a Bus Network
A bus network is a type of local area network (LAN) topology. It’s a simple, reliable, and passive network that’s commonly used in small to medium-sized LANs
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows devices to communicate with each other over short distances without wires.
Bluetooth Scenario
In cars: Bluetooth allows drivers to make phone calls, receive alerts from mapping apps, and send text messages by voice.
W-FI
Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet access.
Wi-Fi Scenario
Working from a Coffee Shop: With Wi-Fi, you can access files stored in the cloud, communicate with clients via email and messaging apps, and browse the internet
Simplex
data in simplex flow can flow in one direction
Half Duplex
data in half duplex can flow in one direction but only one way at a time
Full duplex
Data in full duplex can be both sent and received at the same time
Transmission Media
this is data that can be transmitted to trough various types of cable or wireless media
