Computer Networks Flashcards
What is topology?
the geometric shape that connects computers
What are three classic network topologies? (Optional: Their strengths/weaknesses?)
Star Network (devices can be added/removed but not central node), Ring Network (all go down if one doesn’t work), Bus Network (devices can be added/removed but can’t share signals at the same time)
What are physical mediums?
how devices are connected ex: copper cables, fiber optic cables, wireless
What are Internetworks?
composed of many different networks, AKA the topology and medium of the internet
What is badnwidth?
the speed of the network
What is lag and latency?
Lag is the delay in data transmission while latency is a measure of how much time a piece of information takes to get from source to destination regardless of bandwidth.
What are different naming schemes?
- Psychical/MAC Address: uniquely identify computer
- IP Addresses: registered from network and based on geographical location
- Hostnames: readable and rememberable name on the internet (www.stanford.edu)
