What is hacking?
Hacking is where an unauthorised person tried to get past any kind of sercurity such as a password in order to see data stored on the computer .
Data misuse and unauthorised transfer or copying
This is an illegal transfer of data which can be done by using storage devices such as a disc or memory stick. Personal data, company research and written work such as a book cannot be copied without the owners permison.
Copying and distributing copyrighted software, music and film
This is copying music and films using computer equipment and selling it on the internet without the owners permission. This is a misuse of both computers and the internet.
Email and chat room abuses
This is where people go on email and/or chat rooms and and pretend to be someone else and spread horrific rumours. Another email abuse is spam emails which advertise both legal and illegal products/services.
Pornography
This is where people either store or advertise porn which has been classified as illegal or shows illegal acts.
Identity and financial abuses
This includes stealing credit card numbers to order products or use services on the internet and financial frauds. This can be well thought out schemes or just simply printing out money
Viruses
Viruses are simple programs written by people and are designed to cause nuisance or damage to computers or their files
What is phishing?
Phishing is a way for people to steal your identity
What do phishing scams do
Send you links to you that are supposed to take you to a trusted site. For example it could be people pretending to be a bank saying to re type in your details to get your information.
How can you protect yourself from phishing
- Using trusted sercurity software and setting it to update regularly
- Don’t give any information over email or private message. If you do get an email which looks like it’s from the bank then call the bank.
- Don’t click on links within emails or private messages
- Copy and paste the link into your browser and see where it takes you
- Be cautious of opening attachments and downloading files to avoid a virus
