Floppy Disk
a removable portable magnetic disk on which data and programs can be stored.
Hard Drive
a disk drive that reads and writes from the hard drive
Desktop
the whole computer screen that represents an office desktop.
Hardware
an actual part of the computer system; the machinery and equipment.
Microchip
also called a micro electromotive or an integrated circuit; a micro electronic device comprising many miniature transistors and other electronic components on a single thin rectangle of silicon or sapphire.
Virus
a program that attacks a computer by attaching itself to a program and propagating itself when that program is executed; some can destroy a hard drive.
Shouting
Using all capital letters in e-mail, chat, newsgroup is considered rude.
RAM
is the memory that stores a file by temporarily running an application while you are still working on it.
Window
a division of a display screen in which boundaries of a rectangular box window can be opened and closed and moved around on the display screen.
Software
tells the hard drive what to do; controls the basic capabilities and functions of the computer
PC
short for personal computer; most are standard such as IBM.
ROM
cannot be changed; holds its contents even after the power is turned off and will stay permanently.
Network
a group of interconnected computers and the software and hardware used to connect them.
Hot Swap
to remove components while the power is still on and the system is still operating.
Hack
to be able to overcome computer programs; mostly harmless pranks.
