what is social engineering
(not illegal) when someone tries to collect your personal details in a social situation
eg: phishing emails, scam calls
what is a phishing email
type of social engineering,
when someone emails you to get details off of you by tricking you into thinking you are being contacted by someone else (eg: a company)
how to know if something is a phishing email
- misspelling
- avoiding or not using your name
- unsecure or recognisable webpage or link (httpS: s= secure)
- asking for info that is suspicious
what is the law about computer misuse
computer misuse act 1990
it is illegal to look or modify someone else’s files without permission
what is hacking
illegally accessing or modifying computer files without permission
why do people hack
money, pure mischief, political reasons (exposing someone or revenge), change their own wage
what is malware
-malicious software
- a small program which enters a computer or network through a downloaded file or vulnerability in a network to harm your computer or files in some way
an example of malware
‘i love you’ virus by email
types of virus
logic bomb- sets off at a certain time, often used as blackmail
ransomware- software illegally installed that will only go away if the victim pays money
computer virus- (malware) replicates and installs itself and spreads by email or file sharing
who can legally have your personal data
schools, doctors, email providers, banks, government, etc.
what is GDPR
general data protection regulations
- data must be accurate and up to date
- you have a right to see what data is held about you
- the data must be protected from unauthorised access
what is identity theft
if a criminal had access to your personal info they could act as if they were you and apply for jobs, loan money, etc.
data harvesting tools
- using legal and freely available data harvesting tools to gather info about people (address, name, location, etc.)
