Define cerebral palsy
An impairment of movement and posture, resulting primarily from injury, or abnormal development of the cerebral cortex and other components of the brain associated with movement, strength and muscle tone
Does cerebral progressively worsen?
Not usually
Are all cerebral palsy students intellectually disabled?
not necessarily all, but there are usually one or more elements of developmental delay
Does cerebral palsy have a binary presentation?
NO, presentations can vary according to cause etc
Which birth factors have a higher incidence of cerebral palsy/
- preterm
- incidence increases with decreasing BW and gestational age
What are the different patterns of cerebral palsy manifestation?
What is the relationship between UMN and cerebral palsy?
- Without the inhibitory action of the UMN on LMNs → abnormal tone (increased tone/spastic)
- Uninhibited LMNs → abnormal reflexes
What is seen clinically in cerebral palsy?
- hyperreflexia
- weakness
- increased tone
