A

- California: free
- New Mexico and Utah territories were allowed to choose slave or free
- ended slave trade in Washington, D.C.
- strong fugitive slave law
- northerners strongly opposed
- southerners wanted fugitive slave law to be harsher

Kansas- Nebraska act
A
- Created in 1854 by Stephen Douglas
- Created Kansas and Nebraska territories so transcontinental railroad could be built
- Kansas and Nebraska above 36 30, but allowed to vote on slave or free
- many Missourians crossed the border to vote (pro-slavery: border ruffians)
- Kansas: slave
