A
Upper airway obst where:
- Can’t ventilate
- Can’t intubate
- Life threatening

A

What things mean you can’t intubate? (4 things)
A
- Irretrievable foreign body
- Facial oedema (burns)
- Maxillofacial trauma
- Inf (epiglottitis)

What is the procedure for emergency airway management?
A
Cricothyroidotomy
= placing a tube through whole in neck for oxygen + ventilation

How do you do a Cricothyroidotomy? (4 steps)
A
- Lie patient supine (flat) with neck extended
- Find Adams apple (upper border of thyroid cartilage)
- Just below Adams apple, find cricothyroid membrane (depression between thyroid + cricoid cartilages)
- Use special kit / needle / blade / pen to pierce it

What are the complications of Cricothyroidotomy? (7 things)
A
- Local haemorrhage +/- aspiration
- Posterior perforation of trachea +/e oesophagus
- Subglottic stenosis
- Laryngeal stenosis
- Tube blockage
- Subcutaneous tunnelling
- Vocal chord paralysis / hoarseness
