Compressors Flashcards
Small compressors are usually controlled using which method?
Usually operated by starting and stopping the motor
Which compressor increases air pressure by using high acceleration?
A dynamic compressor
The temperature of an enclosed gas is held constant while the volume is double what happens to its pressure?
The pressure is decreased by half of the original value (the in verse would happen is the volume decreases)
Contaminates in a system are measured by what form of measurement?
The are measured in microns
The purpose of and intercooler is to?
Cooling the compressed air in between stages of compressing or stages of a system
What is the purpose of an air receiver?
It cools and stores the air until needed
A compressor that has a large diameter piston and a small diameter piston takes its discharge from which piston
It takes its discharge from the smaller piston
What could be the cause of excessive noise and vibration on a compressor?
Faulty fly wheel, bearings
What is a reverse in flow on a compressor called?
It is called Surge
What would a compressor set up look like?
It would have a Filter, Compressor, After Cooler, Water Trap, and then a Receiver
How is heat generated when compressing air?
Friction of the molecules are moving and creating heat
Applying heat to a trap volume will have what effect of the pressure of that gas?
The pressure will increase
If a compressor has an outlet of 150 psi what is the inlet pressure?
It is always 14.7 atmosphere pressure (compressor ratios are also alway X by 14.7)
What compressor use must use timing gears in order to drive it?
Dry screw compressors need to have timing gears so that the rotors do not come into contact with each other
Which compressor is used to change velocity into pressure?
A centrifugual compressor like centrifugal pumps change velocity to pressure
