Compounds Flashcards
Compounds are…..
substances that have atoms with atleast two elements chemically bonded together
What happens when elements react
atoms form chemical bonds with other atoms to form compounds
Can you separate the two original elements out of compounds again?
It’s usually difficult to
Making bonds involves…..
Giving atoms away, taking or sharing electrons
What is a compound formed of and how?(ionic bonding)
A metal and a non-metal consists of ions
The metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions and the non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. The opposite charges (positive and negative) of the ions mean that they are strongly attracted to each other. This is called ionic bonding
What does a compound formed of non-metals consist of?( covalent bond)
Molecules. Each atom shares an electron with another atom. This is called a COVALENT BOND. Each atom has to make enough covalent bonds to fill up its outer shell.
What are the properties of a compound like compared to the original elements?
Totally different
Compounds can be either
Small molecules like water or a giant lattice like sodium chloride
