Compostes Flashcards
Define the term composite
A composite is a material comprised with two or more materials that result in enhanced properties
What are the three types of composites
- Fibre based (GRP,CRP)
- Particle based (tungsten carbide, concrete, reinforced polymer)
- Sheet based (glulam)
Define GRP
Glass reinforced plastics is plastic reinforced with fine glass to make a higher strength to weight ratio than its component parts
Examples of GRP
Boat hulls
Pond liners
Flooring
Strengths/ weaknesses of GRP
Strengths
Easily formed into shapes
Can be sanded for a smooth finish
Colour can be add at the start of process
Weakness
Breathing fibres can cause respiratory problems
Define CFRP
Carbon fibre reinforced plastic is plastic reinforced with loose or woven carbon fibres to make a higher strength to weight ratio then its component parts
Examples of CFRP
Propeller blades
Body armour
Golf clubs
