Periodic sentence
Makes sense only when the end of the sentence is reached (main point is “end loaded”)
Parallel structure
Grammatical or structural similarity between sentences or parts of a sentence
Inverted sentence
A sentence where the predicate (main verb) comes before the subject
Declarative
Makes a statement
Imperative
Gives a command
Interrogative
Asks a question
Exclamatory
Makes an exclamation
Simple sentence
One independent clause
Compound sentence
Two or more independent clauses
Complex
One independent clause and one or more dependent clauses
Compound - complex
Two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause
Interrupted sentence
One in which the subordinate elements come in the middle, often set off by dashes
Loose sentence
One in which the subordinate elements come at the end to call attention to it
