What is the Golden Ratio?
A more complex rule than rule of thirds, using the Fibonacci spiral to bring focus to your subject.
What is Negative Space?
An area surrounding the main subject that is left unoccupied. Subject is without a lot of distractions, can make the subject feel small or more significant.
What are Leading Lines?
Using visual lines to lead the viewer to the main subject of the image.
What is Framing?
Anything in a scene that can be used to form a visual frame around the subject or focal point.
What is the Rule of Thirds?
Placing your important elements in your scene along or at the points of the rule of thirds grid.
What is Balance?
Placing objects in image within a frame that makes them of equal visual weight.
What is Symmetry?
Creating an image that is visually similar or identical.
What is focal length?
Focal length is the distance between the camera sensor and the len’s optical center.
What is a zoom lens?
A lens that can shoot at multiple focal lengths
i.e. a 24-70mm lens
What is a prime lens?
A lens that can shoot at only one focal length
i.e. 55mm
What is a wide angle lens?
- Less than 35mm
* Great for wide expanses and landscapes
What is a telephoto lens?
- Medium 70-300mm
- Super telephoto 300+mm
- Great for detailed and close up shots
Pro tip: Perspective and Angle
Change up your angle. Do not always shoot from eye-level.

Overlap objects to create a layering effect that makes your images more dynamic, less flat.
Pro tip: Shapes
Use shapes in composing your shots paying attention to how they are layered and how they fit in the frame. Keep it simple when using shapes.
