Composites and Masonry Flashcards
1
Q
What four characteristics do composites have?
A
– Combination of materials which differ in composition or form – Remain bonded together – Retain their identities and properties. – Act in concert to provide improved specific or synergistic characteristics not obtainable by any of the original components acting alone
2
Q
Two phases in composites?
A
- Matrix phase
- Dispersion Phase
3
Q
What is the matrix phase?
A
It is the continuous material constituent which encloses the composite and gives it its bulk form
Matrix phase may be metal , ceramic or polymer
4
Q
What is the Dispersion Phase?
A
It is the structure constituents, which determines the internal structure of composite.
Dispersion phase is connected to matrix phase by bonding
5
Q
What is toughness?
A
The ability of a material to absorb energy and deform without fracturing
