composites 5 Flashcards
what are some techniques of fabricating short fibres?
compression, injection moulding, extrusion, like polymer processing
what are techniques of fabricating continuous fibre reinforced plastics?
pultrusion, filament winding, prepreg production processes, resin infusion
what type of components are manufactured using pultrusion?
continuous lengths and cross sectional shapes. usual reinforcements are glass, ceramic, aramid. usually impregnated with thermosetting resin
what is pultrusion process?
continuous process with wide variety of shapes, no practical limit to length
what matrix and reinforcements are used for prepreg process?
thermoplastics can be used for this, carbon, glass and aramid reinforcements
what are sandwich panels?
two strong outer sheets separated by a layer of less-dense material (core has lower stiffness and strength, and the faces bear most of the in-plane loading and transverse bending stress)
what are some typical face materials of sandwich structures?
aluminium, fibre reinforced plastics, titanium, steel, plywood
what is the function of the core in sandwich structures?
provides a degree of shear rigidity along the planes. and separates the faces.
what are some applications of sandwich structures?
building - roof, floor, wall
aircraft - wings, fuselage, tailplane skins
