Components Of Plasma Membrane Flashcards
Phospholipid bilayer
A structural component of cell membranes consisting of two layers of phospholipid molecules arranged with their hydrophilic (polar) heads facing outward and their hydrophobic (nonpolar) tails facing inward, forming a barrier between the cell’s interior and exterior environments
Hydrophilic (polar) heads & Hydrophobic (non polar) tails
head (phosplate group) - hydrophilic (attracted to the water) / polar
tails (2 fatty acid tails) - hydrophobic (fear of water) / non - polar
Cholesterol
Embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, contributing to membrane stability and fluidity.
Carbohydrate
Attached to proteins or lipids on the extracellular side, involved in cell recognition, signaling, and adhesion.
Glycolipid
Lipid molecule with attached carbohydrate chains, found on the extracellular side, involved in cell recognition and interactions.
