Components of fitness Flashcards
Balance
Maintaining the centre of mass over the base of support
Flexibility
The range of movement possible at a joint
Muscular endurance
Ability of muscle groups to undergo repeated contractions without fatigue
Power
Product of speed and strength
Strength
The ability to overcome a resistance
Speed
The maximum rate an individual can perform a movement or cover a distance
Agility
The ability to change direction at speed whilst maintaining control
Cardiovascular endurance
The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles
Reaction time
The time taken to initiate a response to a stimulus
Coordination
The ability to move 2 or more body parts together smoothly and efficiently
4 types of strength
- Maximal strength
- Dynamic strength
- Static strength
- Explosive strength
Maximal strength + example
The maximum force produced in one contraction (1 RPM).
E.g. single punch - Boxing
Dynamic strength + example
Repeated muscular contractions ( muscular endurance )
E.g. 1500m - Rowing
Static strength + example
The maximum force that can be applied to an immovable object , the muscles stay the same length.
E.g. Plank, Handstand
Explosive strength + example
Product of speed and strength ( power ).
E.g. start of 100m sprint, upward phase of long jump or high jump.
