Components of a Sailboat Flashcards
What is the hull?
It is the load-carrying part of the vessel
What is the rig?
It is the collective term for the various elements that form a sailboat’s power system
What are three interacting parts of the rig?
The spars, the rigging, and the sails.
Length Overall
This is the length of the boat along its deck from bow to stern
Length at the Waterline
It is the length of the boat is actually in the water
Beam
The width of the hull at the widest point
Draft
The depth of water required to float the boat
Centerboards
These retract by pivoting sternward
Daggerboard
These retract straight upward
Boottop or Bootstripe
A stripe painted along and above the waterline when the boat is floating upright. It is reference to determine if the boat has been properly loaded.
What does it mean if the boat is correctly or incorrectly trimmed?
Correctly trimmed - when the boottop shows clearly around the hull and is parallel with the water surface.
Incorrectly trimmed - If it is tipped to one side or the other, or too high or low in the water
What is the coaming?
It is the raised lip around the edge of the cockpit - it serves to deflect water
What is the spar?
It is the general term for the rigid members that support and extend the sails.
What is a gooseneck?
It is a universal joint and allows the boom to pivot up, down or sideways
What is the most expensive type of spar?
Carbon fiber - it is lighter and stronger than aluminum
What is a mast step?
What the mast fits into
What is a spar heel?
The mast fits into the spar heel
What is a mast partner?
Where the mast passes through the cabin roof. The mast partner takes the strain of the spar
what is standing rigging?
This is rigging that stays put. It supports the mast under tension
What his running rigging?
This requires frequent adjustment and runs through blocks
What is a backstay?
It keeps the mast from falling forward over the bow
What is a forestay?
It keeps the mast from falling over the stern
What is a headstay?
It is a forestay that runs from the very bow of the boat to a position at or near the top of the mast.
What is an inner forestay or babystay?
This runs from a point on the foredeck midway between the bow and the mast to a landing point two-thirds of the way up the mast. This is used to fly a smaller jib in strong winds.
What is a running backstay?
The aftward tension to balance the forestay.
