Components Of A Computer System Flashcards
What is the central processing unit? (CPU)
The brain of the computer which controls how the rest of the computer works. It is assisted by the CU and the ALU.
What is the CU? (Control unit)
A component of a computers CPU that controls the flow of data into storage and the alu.
What is the arithmetic and logic unit? (ALU)
It performs the calculations and logical operations in a computer
What are the two categories storage can be grouped into!
Primary storage and secondary storage
What is the primary storage?
It is also called the main memory and consists of RAM and ROM.
What is RAM?
Random access memory is temporary memory that stores data and instructions for the computer to quickly access while performing tasks
What is ROM?
Read only memory is permanent memory that stores essential data and instructions for the computer which cannot be altered or erased easily
What are the units of storage?
B, Byte
KB, Kilobyte
MB, Megabyte
GB, Gigabyte
TB, Terabyte
How many bytes make a kilobyte?
1024 bytes
How many kilobytes make a megabyte?
1000 kilobytes
How many megabytes make a gigabyte?
1000 megabytes
What is the secondary storage?
Storage that is needed to store data on a permanent basis for later use. Examples are flash drives, memory cards and dvds
What is PROM?
Programmable read only memory is a type of memory that can only be programmed once. Once written the data is permanent and cannot be altered or erased.
What is EPROM?
Erasable Programmable read only memory is a type of memory that can be programmed and erased multiple times. It is erased using a UV light.
