What is a fastening
A fastening is a component used for closing products for fit, security or for enhancement
Advantages of zips?
One of the most secure fastenings
Reasonably quick and easy to apply to products
What are zips usually made from?
Woven cotton, polyester and poly cotton
How are most buttons attached?
Mostly buttonholes but they can be attached by loops
Disadvantages of buttons?
Can be damaged in the wash or dissolve in dry cleaning chemicals
Advantages of buttons?
They fasten
They can enhance a product through matching or contrasting colours
When are hook and eyes used?
They are used when a flat fastening is needed
How can hook and eyes be attached?
They can be hand or machine sewn in place and also come in tape form
Advantages of Velcro?
Quick application
Safe and easy to use
Washes well and is hard wearing
Disadvantages of Velcro?
Not suitable for finer fabrics and can pick up other fibres over time
Advantages of press studs?
Cheap
Easy application
Advantages of eyelets and lacing?
Can be decorative and allows adjustment for fit of the product
Advantages of buckles?
Allows adjustment
