Components Flashcards
Define Gears
Gears are toothed wheels on shafts that transmit speed, torque, or force. The teeth on the gears interconnect.
Define Pulleys
Pulleys are wheels on a shaft with taut cables around. They are designed to support movement. Pulleys can transmit lifting power, apply a force or transmit power.
Define Bearings
A bearing is a component that permits rotational or linear motion. Bearings can also improve efficiency by reducing friction.
Define Universal Joints
A universal joint is a component that transmits rotational motion at any required angle.
Define a Ratchet & Pawl
A ratchet is designed to allow rotational motion in one direction only.
Define a Spring
A spring is an elastic component that stores mechanical energy.
Define Mechanical Fixings
A Mechanical Fixing is a metal used to secure two objects together, eg. Bracket
Define Rivets
A rivet is a metal peg with a head on one end. Normal rivets go through the hole then hit with a hammer.
Define Piston
A piston transmits reciprocating motion.
Define crankshaft
A crankshaft converts linear motion into reciprocating, and vice versa.
Define Lever
A lever is a rigid bar positioned on a fulcrum. A lever can make it easier to move a load.
Define a Seal
A seal is any device and/or substance that joins two things together and prevents anything passing between them.
Define Gusset Plate
Gusset plates are thick sheets of steel that are used to connect beams and girders to columns, or to connect truss members.
Define Solenoid
A solenoid is an electromagnetic that converts electricity into linear motion. The electromagnet moves an armature towards it in a straight line.
Define Sensor
A sensor detects conditions in an environment and relays this information through the circuit, so the suitable reaction can be produced.
Define Switch
A device that connects and breaks an electronic circuit: turns an electric current on and off.
Define Semi-conductor
A semi-conductor is a substance that can conduct electricity under some conditions, but not others. They are useful for controlling electrical current.
Define Resistor
A resistor is a device that limits current in a circuit.
Define Capacitor
A capacitor is a component that stores electrical charge.
Define Motor
Motor converts electricity into rotary motion.
Define Relay
A relay is when a small circuit is used to turn on a more powerful circuit; using an electromagnet
Define Transformer
A transformer is a device that can increase, or decrease, the voltage in an alternating current circuit.
Define LED
An LED allows electricity to pass through it in one direction. When it does, the diode glows.
Define Audible Devices
Audible devices are components that convert noise into electricity or electricity into noise.
Define Single Acting Piston Cylinder
A gas or liquid forces this piston. The piston moves and applies linear motion. The piston has a spring so it moves into the position it was before the force was applied.
Define Double Acting Piston Cylinder
A gas or liquid forces this piston. The piston moves and applies linear motion. The fluid can go in either side, meaning the piston can move either way.
Define Linear Actuator
A linear actuator converts energy (from air, electricity or gas) into linear motion.
Define Valve
A valve is a device used for controlling the passage of fluid through a pipe or duct by opening, closing or partially blocking a pipe.
Define Check Valve
A one-way valve is a component designed to allow fluids to flow in one direction only. It is normally an automated system that opens/closes according to the fluid’s velocity.
Define Pump
A pump is used to move liquids and compress gases by using suction or pressure.
Define One-Way Valve
A one-way valve is designed to allow fluids to flow in one direction only.
Define Restrictor
A restrictor limits the power of an engine. The restrictor limits the engines top speed, and increases the safety of the engine.
Define Quick Couplers
Quick couplers are components that allow tools to be attached onto a machine quickly.
Define Reservoir
In a pneumatic system there are fluid reservoirs. These store fluid to be used later in other pneumatic components. The reservoir releases the fluid when it is needed in the system.
Define Turbine
A turbine is a component used for producing continuous power where a wheel or rotor is made to revolve by a fast-moving flow of fluid.
Define Fluid Flywheel
Fluid flywheels are pneumatic components that transmit rotary power without the use of mechanical input. Instead, motion is transmitted through the fluid in the coupling.
