Component 6 Flashcards
What is current?
Flow of electrical charge
What is current measured in (units)?
Amps
What is current measured with? (Equipment)
Ammeter
What is voltage measured in (units)?
Volts
What is voltage measured with?
A voltmeter
What can change the current?
Changing the resistance and the voltage
If you increase the resistance, what happens to current?
Decreases (Gets smaller)
What is resistance?
How difficult it is for electric current to pass through a component
What supplies current to a circuit?
Batteries and cells
What type of current do batteries provide?
Direct current (DC)
What type of current does mains electricity provide?
Alternating current (AC)
What voltage is UK mains electricity? (please give the unit)
230V
Why do you need a complete circuit?
For electric current to flow
What are the 3 types of wire in a plug?
- live wire – brown
- neutral wire – blue
- earth wire – green and yellow
stripes.
What is the brown wire in a plug?
Live wire
What is the blue wire in a plug?
Neutral wire
What is the green and yellow striped wire in a plug?
Earth wire
What does the earth wire in a plug do?
The earth wire is a safety wire
to stop the appliance becoming
live
What does the fuse in a plug do?
The fuse contains a thin
piece of wire, which melts if
the current becomes too large,
thereby cutting off the supply.
Why wouldn’t a plug need an earth wire/fuse?
If it was double insulated
What is the unit for energy?
Kilowatt hour (kWh)
How is energy (kWh) calculated?
Power (kW) x time (h)
How do magnets attract?
Opposite poles attract – this is a non-contact force
How do magnets repel?
Like poles attract (if they are the same) – this is a non-contact force
