Complimentary Therapies (CAM) Flashcards
CAM - Defined
Complimentary & Alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices & products that are not presently considered conventional medicine by the health profession
AOTA statement about CAM’s *
OT practitioners may utalize CAM in the delivery of OT services when they are used as PREPARATORY activities to facilitate the ability of clients to engage in their daily life occupations
Factors in Treatment Effectiveness
Theraputic relationship, alliance
Client Dx SX problems
Intervention, operational definition (share deff. w/ pts - what is the CAM used for
Context, environment & SES
Increasing Prevalance of CAM
80% of the world pop. uses CAM
USA 38% of pop uses CAM annually
83 million adults in US spent 33.9 billion on CAM (2007)
Reasons for CAM
Rising cost of conventional medicine Scientific evidence for CAM Impersonal care by physician Recognition of lifestyle factors of disease Pt. control of TX
Client therapist Relationship
Develop alliance
Recognize clients needs & wishes regarding choices in interventions
Principle 1 : Innate Healing
The body has an innate healing response that can be reinforced through nutrition, exercise, occupation, & mind-body exercise
There is wisdom in the body
The body has a homeostatic mechanism to get to mid point (help heal themselves)
Principle 2 : Do no Harm
Be aware of pt.’s current medical status
Interactions between CAMS and traditional TX’s w/ active infections or cancer can cause adverse effecs
Principle 3 : Treat the Cause
The clinician should attempt to identify and TX the underlying cause rather than just the SX
SX are viewed as the body;s attempt to heal itself
Causes can include: mental, physical, emotional, & spiritual factors
Principle 4 : Prevention
*PREVENTION IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF CAM
Building health
Accomplished by lifestyle changes
Restore health & healthy habits,
Principle 5 : Be a Teacher
The OT using the CAM is a teacher & encourages the pt. to incorporate healthy practices into everyday life
(Ed. on managing sx)
Principle 6 : Treat the Whole Person
OT treats the whole person by taking int consideration the interaction of the dynamic systems in a persons life
(Hollistic perspective)
Naturalistic approaches related to CAM
Exercise Diet Family SUpport Continuity of daily life patterns Health perspective Realistic life goals
Myofascial Release (MFR) Fascial Overview
Fascial tissue is a complex connective tissue involved w/ the function of all cells including central, peripheral, and autonimic nervous system
It lines all the vital organs
MFR Overview
Manual energy therapy designed to treat the fascia
Problem areas are located by palpation/observation
Hands are used to apply mechanical pressure to stretch fascia and release collagenous barriers that cause pain, restrictions, loss of AROM, or decreased organ function
(Enhances skills of an OT)
MFR Indications for use
Spasticity (stretch & release)
Soft tissue restrictions
Pain
AROM
