Q

Myofascial Release (MFR)

A
  • facial tissues is a complex connective tissue involved with the function of all cells including central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous system.
  • it lines all the vital organs

*fascia can change depending on dx, decreased movement forms around scar to help with healing but decrease movement and increase pain can put things out of alignment.

Q

MFR

A
  • Manuel energy therapy designed to treat the fascia
  • problem areas are located by palpation/observation (detect tone, trigger points *)
  • hands are used to apply mechanical pressure to stretch fascia and release collagenous barriers that cause pain, restrictions, loss of AROM or decreased organ function .

*clean dry skin
feel tissue loosen up in hands

Q

indications for MFR:

A

Q

trigger points

A

-sharp, localized, radiating or referred pain

  • restricts motion
  • causes muscle weakness
  • elicits muscle (*contract in compensatory factor)
  • causes secondary trigger points
  • upper traps, upper cervical, kinesotaping
  • ice after trigger point therapy to reduce pain and swelling’

*home program- overhead pulleys, cane exercises, strategies for fx

  • increase strength
  • resistance is introduced after core strength is improved to allow loading of injured tissue
  • environmental conditions that are altered:
    • narrow or widen BOS

Q

craniosacral therapy (CST)

A

manual therapy technique

  • focus on normalization of body functions related to craniosacral system
  • semienclosed hydraulic physiological system)
    - duramater
    - CSF
  • regulates the quantity and pressure of the bones to which dura mater attaches, the joints or sutures of the skull that interconnect these bones
    • cranium
    • 2nd and 3rd cervical vertebrae
    • sacrum
    • coccyx

*out pt. strategy

Q

Feldenkrais

A
  • humans must move thru mvmt unlike animals
  • humans take years to develop mvmt habits
  • by developing an exploratory sense of learning mvmt, we can develop new ways to sense and move that expands awareness.
  • mindfull tx approach
    pt. needs understanding
17
Q

Feldenkrais: ATM (awareness thru mvmt)

A
  • verbally directed
  • 20-60min sessions
  • postural control
  • perceptual capacities (*close eyes, feel motion with sensation and body)
  • goal=healthy, positive, easy action
  • you can undo anything thats problematic
  • repetitive training process
18
Q

reiki

A

Touch healing system
Rei = universal energy of soul
Ki = vital life force
Joining of spiritual dimension & physical to stimulate healing process and release stress

  • hands right over the body or right on the body- feel the energy system
  • head to tail format feeling the body
19
Q

benefits of reiki

A
  • deep relaxation
  • increase energy
  • reduce stress
  • enhance health and wellbeing
  • reduce aches and pains
  • preventative healthcare
  • energizes and balances
20
Q

reiki helps with:

A
Hypertension
Chronic pain
Headache
Muscle aches
Parkinson’s (* motor controll awareness of body and coordination)
Arthritis
Back Pain
21
Q

3 Practitioner Reiki Levels

A

1st degree: Practitioner’s initiation
Work on oneself, hand placement

2nd degree: Practicing on others, expanded opening of the energy channels

3rd degree: Reiki Master or teacher

22
Q

Therapeutic Touch

A

Practitioner centers their mind & body with intent to heal
Palms move slowly over body
Impacts energy field

*hands near pt. but not on pt. can feel energy channels

23
Q

When can CAM’s be combined with OT?

A

Preparatory methods

Purposeful activities to facilitate the ability of clients to engage in daily life occupations

24
Q

How do you know whether to use CAMs?

A

Evaluate clients strengths, limitations, priorities & needs related to daily occupations
Determine whether CAMs are consistent with client’s cultural practices, priorities, needs, is safe, and appropriate to facilitate their participation in daily life occupations
Evaluate outcomes

25
Q

Scope of OT practice

A

Must follow state & federal guidelines when billing for OT services

26
Q

chronic low back pain

A

massage, reiki, stretching, MFR

27
Q

Cancer

A

therapeutic touch
careful using cams with pets who have isolated cancer. don’t want it to spread (don’t use MFR or other cams/careful what you use. more traditional approach!)

28
Q
