What is sepsis?
extreme body response to infection
life threatening medical emergency
why is sepsis important
failure to recognise or implement appropriate tx can result in rapid progression leading to tissue damage, organ failure and death
most common sites
lungs (64%)
abdomen (20%)
bloodstream (15%)
sepsis risk assessment - high risk
- temp (under 36 or over 38)
- HR - over 90
- resp rate - over 20
- WCC over 12 or under 4(x10(12))
- BP systolic less than 100
sepsis red flag
altered mental state/confusion
unable to stand
unable to catch 1 breath
fast breathing
skin pale
rash won’t dafe
recent chemotherapy
oliguria
Amber flag
behaviour change
immunocsuppressed
trauma/surgery in last 8 weeks
breathing harder than normal
reduced uirne output
temp below 36
wound infection
no unrine in 12-18 hours
call 999 if any of?
Slurred speech or confusion
Extreme shivering or muscle pain
Passing no urine
Severe breathlessness
I feel I might die
Skin mottle, ashen blue or very pale
What are the sepsis six
BUFALO
1. give O2
2. take blood culutre
3. give IV fluids
4. give a fluid challenge
5. measure lactate
6. measure urine output
