Complications Of Sex Flashcards
What is the germ line?
Set of cells that only produce gametes
Somatic cells
Any cell of a living organism other than the reproductive cells
Myoid cell
Smooth muscle cell surrounding the seminiferous tubules in the testis
Spermatogenesis (3 steps)
- Proliferation of germ line stem cells by mitosis
- Reduction of cells to haploid state by meiosis
- Differention into mature spermatozoa
How many sperm/ml semen is subfertility?
<2x10^7
Where does mitotic proliferation take place?
Basal side of tubule (side furthest from lumen)
Sertoli cells
Somatic cells of the testis essential for testis formation and spermatogenesis
What happens during maturation of sperm?
- sperm shed & flow to the epididymis
- epididymis alters seminal fluid
- epididymal secretions activate sperm & make them capable of swimming
In females when does mitosis and meiosis of gametes occur?
Foetal life
What is FHS?
Follicle stimulating hormone (produced at puberty)
What happens in the primary follicle?
Oocyte grows & synthesises rRNA & mRNA
What happens in the ripening follicle?
Oocyte synthesises a glycoprotein zona pellucida & granulosa cells multiply
What do the remains of the ruptured follicle become?
Corpus luteum
What does the corpus luteum do?
Produces hormones that prepare the lining of the uterus to receive an embryo (CL dies after ~week if woman not pregnant)
When is FSH required?
Antrum formation (from preantral/secondary follicle to early antral follicle)
