What are the issues with assessing the effectiveness of acupuncture?

A

Blinding. It is difficult to use sham acupuncture needles to blind both practitioner and patient. Also difficult to use sham acupuncture locations especially if both practitioner/patient is aware of sites.

Why is it difficult to assess chiropractic evidence?

A

Difficult to blind both parties even with placebo manipulations. So try comparative treatments such as physiotherapy.

  • Belief that is will be more effective than conventional treatments
  • Exhausted conventional options,
  • Conventional options associated with side effects/risks,
  • No conventional therapy available,
  • Conventional approach emotionally/spiritually bereft,
  • Feeling more in control
