Complement Cascade Flashcards
What is the difference between the classical and alternative pathways of complement activation?
The classical pathway is activated by antibodies and starts with C1, the alternative pathway is activated by pathogens and starts with C3.
What happens when C3 cleaves?
C3a and C3b are produced. C3b opsonises pathogens to facilitate phagocytosis. C3a forms a complex with C5a which causes the degranulation of mast cells, chemotaxis, and an increase in vascular permeability.
What are the outcomes of the complement cascade?
Chemotaxis, membrane attack complex formed, opsonisation and agglutination, oedema.
What the process called where immune cells crawl out of blood vessels through gaps in the blood vessels, and into the tissues?
Diapedesis.
