competitive neuromuscular blockers Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 competitive neuromuscular blockers (post synaptic)
A
Tubocurarine, Gallamine and Vecuronium
2
Q
How do these blockers work?
A
Competes with ACh and prevents it from binding to the nicotinic receptor at the NMJ thereby preventing muscle contraction (paralysis of skeletal muscle)
3
Q
Why is tubocurarine rarely used?
A
Has more side effects e.g. bronchoconstriction due to histamine release
4
Q
What is the use of these blockers?
A
Used in general anaesthesia - provides muscle relaxation for surgery
