Comparitive Biomechanics Flashcards
1
Q
Formula for hoop stress
A
Force = pressure x height x diameter
Stress = force/(2heightwall thickness)
Overall: hoop stress will increases linearlly with vessel radius - so smaller vessels need a much thinner wall to maintain the same pressure as larger vessels
2
Q
Stress calculation for a biomaterial
A
Stress = force/cross sectional area
3
Q
Strain calculation for a biomineral
A
Strain = extension/length
4
Q
Why are many natural materials resistant to fracture?
A
ex: narce is a stiff and fracture resistant material calcium carbonate nanoplatelets in a protein matrix
is difficult to fracture becuase cracks cannot propagate easily through the material
