Tan (“as”) + adjective/adverb + como=
Comparison between two equal items
Example:
“Virginia es tan simpática como Teresa.” Virginia is as friendly as Teresa.
Form of tanto + noun + como=
Comparison between two equal items
Example:
“Los Castillo tienen tantos coches como los Duarte.”
The Castillos have as many cars as the Duartes.
Tanto + como (no word in between the two) =
As much/many as
Example:
“Uds. hablan tanto como nosotros.”
You talk as much as we do.
Tan + adjective/adverb =
Makes “tan” mean “so”
Example:
“Antonio es tan simple.”
Antonio is so simple.
Tan + adjective/adverb + noun=
Makes “tan” mean “such”
Example:
“Antonio es una persona tan simple.”
Antonio is such a simple person.
Adjective/adverb/noun + mas/menos + que =
Comparison of inequality
Que is translated as “than”
Example:
“California tiene más habitantes bilingües que Florida.”
California has more bilingual inhabitants than Florida.
Verb + más/menos + que =
Comparing an action
Example:
“¿Por qué hablas menos que antes en la clase? ¿Pasó algo?”
Why do you speak less than before in class? Did something happen?
Adjective/adverb/noun + verb+ el/la/los/las/+ mas/menos + de=
Superlative comparison. The “de” is often translated as “in”
Example:
“Este es el vino más caro del restaurante.”
This is the most expensive wine in the restaurant
Más bueno
Better than, but in reference to inherent moral quality
Example:
“La señora Cavazos es más buena que las otras.”
Mrs. Cavazos is kinder than the others.
Más malo
Worse than, but in reference to inherent moral quality
Example:
“Aquel hombre es más malo que nadie.”
That man is more wicked (evil) than anyone.
Subject + verb+ mas/menos + adjective/adverb + de lo que=
Used to compare an idea, thought or notion
Example:
“La ciudad es menos peligrosa de lo que era en el pasado.”
The city is less dangerous than (what) it was in the past.

Than what
