eg. Harry Potter, Lord Of the Rings, etc.
What are the four basic elements?

What are the Seven basic characteristics?
-You can usually read in one sitting
-Has one main incident
-Usually has two main characters
-Has one main setting
-Has one main theme
-catches the readers attention right away
-Should have a definite ending
What is a short Story?
A shorty story is a story is a story that can be read in one sitting
What is the theme?
The theme is the main point of the story
How do you determine the theme?
-The title of the story
The conflict and the results
-Weather the protagonist has learned anything
-What insight into life is revealed
What is the plot?
The plot refers to the sequence of related incidents
What are the two main forces of plot?
The Protagonist (the main character)
The antagonist (the force against the main character)
What are the five main stages of plot (the story arch)
-Introduction
-rising action-climax
-falling action
-conclusion
What is the setting?
The setting is the time and the place of the plot
Whats the difference between Chronological and Historical time?
Chronological: we learn whats happening in eg. 1984
Historical: a particular time in famous history
Whats the difference between specific and geographic places?
Specific: Is usually a room or street
Geographic: A location found on a map (Eg. Edmonton)
What is the atmosphere?
The description of the physical surroundings or environment
What is mood?
Mood is what the reader feels after reading the story
What is the tone?
What the writer feels toward the subject matter
What is characterisation?
Revealing the quality of a characters personality
What is direct and indirect characterisation?
Direct: By what the writer says
Indirect: Based on what the character says, does, or thinks
What are plausible characters?
Characters who are believable
What is Motive/Motivation
The reason the why the character behaves the way they do
What is a flat character?
A character with few personality traits
What is a round character?
A character with many personality traits
What is a stock character?
A character who is stereotyped
eg. The blond, mean cheerleader who is typically the cheer captain
What is a static character?
A character who does not change their view point
what is a dynamic character
Is the oposit of a static character, they change their view point
What is a character sketch?
The description of the character
eg. Hair colour, height, etc
What are the who types of irony?
Situational: The oposit of whats expected to happen
Dramatic: The character speaking or doing an action is unaware of the irony (readers are aware)
What is first person major?
Narrator the the main character (uses “I” in text)
What is first person minor?
The narrator is a minor character (uses “I” in text)
What is Third person objective?
Readers do not know the thoughts of any characters (uses “They” in text)
What is third person limited omniscient ?
Readers know the thoughts of characters (uses “They” in text)
What is a symbol?
Something that represents something else
What is a flashback?
the focus is in the present but for more context to the story they will use a flashback so the reader is more aware of the main story
What is foreshadowing?
Hints of something positive or negative happening later in the story
What is foreboding?
Clues in the story that something negative will happen later into the story
What is dramatic character foil
Similarities between two or more characters establishing their differences.
What is poetic justice?
The outcome where characters receive reward or punishment for their deeds
Who are “Hero’s”
Protagonist’s who possess typical qualities of a hero
Who are Anti-Heors?
Protagonist’s who are un-heroic
