Comparison Of Basicity Of Alkyl Amines And Ammonia Flashcards
Alkyl amines are stronger bases than ammonia, why?
1) due to the electron releasing nature of alkyl group in alkyl amines it push electron towards nitrogen and makes the unshared electron Pair more available for sharing with the proton of the acid.
2) also the substituted ammonium ion formed from the amine get stabilized charge by the + I effect of the alkyl group
Basic nature of aliphatic amine should increase with?(only in gaseous stage)
Increase in alkyl group
Order of basicity of amines in gaseous phase?
Teritiary amine>secondary amine>primary amine> NH3
In aqueous solution the basicity of amines depends upon?
1) inductive effect
2)steric hindrance
3) solvation effect
How does solvation effect effects the basicity of amines in aqueous solution?
The greater is the size ion , lesser will be the solvation which decreases the stability of ion ,therefore basicity decreases
Order of reactivity due to solvation effect in aqueous solution of amine?
1°>2°>3°
How does steric hindrance effects the baisc strength of amines in aqueous solution?
If the alkyl group is small ,there is no steric hindrance to H bonding ,but if tha alkyl group is larger than CH3 group ,the steric hindrance will effect the H bonding , therefore the size of alkyl group also determine the order of basic strength
The order of basic strength of ethyl substituted amines
2°>3°>1°
(C2H5)2NH> (C2H5)3N>(C2H5)NH2>NH3
2°>1°>3°
(CH3)2NH>CH3NH2 >(CH3)N>NH3
Is alkyl amines stronger or weaker base than ammonia?
Stronger
