Compare data sets Flashcards
1
Q
If there are no outliers, which do we compare?
A
mean (measure of central location) and standard deviation (measure of spread)
2
Q
If there ARE outliers, which do we compare?
A
median (measure of central location) and IQR (measure of spread)
3
Q
How to find standard deviation?
A
- find all deviance scores (distance between given data point and mean)
- square all deviance scores and then add them all
- ^^ divide this by no. of data points (= variance)
- square root to get standard deviation
4
Q
position of quartile must always be…
A
multiple of 0.5
5
Q
If Q1 is not a multliple of 0.5 then we round
A
UP to the nearest 0.5
6
Q
If Q3 is not a multiple of 0.5 then we round
A
DOWN to the nearest 0.5
7
Q
median
A
n+1 / 2
8
Q
negatively skewed
A
tail on left
9
Q
positively skewed
A
tail on right
10
Q
when is a distribution skewed?
A
when mode, mean and median aren’t the same
