Companion animals Flashcards
What is transferred in passive immuniastion?
Antibodies directly i.e. colostrum antibodies or antiserum
What forms of active immunisation are there?
All are antigen and adjuvant
types: modified live, killed, toxoids, sub-unit, recombinant
How might you give a vaccine if you wanted ann IGA response?
IgA is mucosal so would give it eg nasally (kennel cough)
how many doses do you need to achieve protection with a MLV/recombinant viral vaccine?
Generally only one dose if animal over 3 months old
How many doses so you need to achieve protection with killed/sub-unit vaccines?
two doses 2-3 weeks apart
why do you need to vaccinate at 6-8 and 9-10 weeks of age
What is in the core vaccination group for dogs?
Distemper (CDV)
Parvovirus (CPV)
Hepatitis (CAV - canine adenovirus)
Rabies in endemic areas / if travelling
What non core vaccinations are widely available for dogs?
NB: Think about whether the dog needs it or not!
Leptospirosis
Kennel cough
Leishmaniosis
What are the WSAVA guidelines for vaccinating puppies?
Vaccinate at 8,12 and 14-16 weeks
Serology at 20w to confirm seroconversion
These guielines not really followed in practice!
How often should animals be boostered for core MLV vaccinations according to WSAVA?
Always receive a booster at 1 year old
Then every 3 years
Should really sero-test rather than just boosting but more expensive
How often do you need to boost for leptospirosis?
Every year
What does CaniLeish protect against?
Leishmania infantum
What is the protocol for CaniLeish vaccination?
3 priming vaccinations, 3 weekss apart then boosted annualy
How efficacious is canileish?
Not that great, much less than e.g. DHP
Do you need to restart the course if an animal goes over its booster date?
No! But NB insurance and licensing
What is in the anti cancer vaccine?
What are the core vaccinations for cats?
Calicivirus
Herpesvirus
Panleukopenia virus
Which components of the core cat vaccine are most efficacious?
Panleukopenia most efficacious, calici and herpes are less so
FHV often protects against signs of disease but not of infection. May get latent infection which recrudesces in old or immunocompromised animal even if vaccinated
What are the WSAVA guidelines on cat vac protocol?
CHP at 8w, 10w and 16w
Booster at 1 year then every 3 years
What does FIP vaccinate against?
Feline enteric coronavirus which predisposes to FIP. Bit of a misnomer
Why is FIP vaccine a bit pointless?
Kittend probably already infected by mother if they’re going to get infected
Why do Feline injection sute sarcomas occur and how can you avoid them?
Due to inflammatory reaction to adjuvant
Use non adjuvant one or rotate sites
What are rabbits immunised against?
What do you give for FPT in a foal?
Hypermune equine plasma
