Comp Review Manual Behavior Management/Hospital Dentistry Flashcards
What is the critical age to assess temperament in terms of its predictive value of behavioral problems?
Age 9 and 11 according to teachers, 13 and 15 by parents
Whats “goodness of fit” refer to?
Either temperamental match between parent and child or that certain temperaments fit better than others in given situations
Is the lack of attachment(strong emotion felt for another person) a predictor of behavior difficulties?
May confer some risk of behavior difficulties later in life but not a strong predictor in and of itself.
A child with a secure attachment is more likely to have
higher sociability, effective emotion regulation, compliance with parental requests
a child with insecure attachment is more likely to have
lower self control, greater anger, increased behavioral problems
Whats the relationship between temperament and attachment?
children with disruptive behavior are more likely to have attachment disorders and vice versa and differences in behavior are most likely related to differences in temperament
Maturational theory of child development(hall and gesell)
- development is internally driven(genetic)
- very little depends on parenting
- temperament has no specific role
- most studies were based on middle class children(discounted)
Psychosexual theory of child development(freud)
- emotional life has strong influence on behavior and development
- emotions, dreams, frustrations, feelings matter
- Parent-child interactions influence personality, resiliency, behavior and adjustment
behaviorism theory of child development(pavlov, watson, skinner)
- environment is source of behaviorial change
- patterns of reinforcement
- conditioning
- stimulus-response
- rewarded behaviors stay, punished behaviors extinguished
- behavior modifications work to change behaviors
social learning theory(derived from behaviorism)
- society dictates behavior(children learn from social context)
- Integrate internal processes and environment
- Development is series of upward spirals based on past successes and failures
- social experiences fuel future development
